Oakland HBCU INITIATIVE
Launched in 2025, the Oakland HBCU Initiative is a coalition of Oakland residents seeking to open an Historically Black College or University (HBCU) satellite campus in Oakland, in partnership with a legacy HBCU institution. We envision an E-STEAM Innovation Hub (Entrepreneurship + Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) that reimagines higher education as a driver of inclusive economic mobility. This transformative opportunity would expand an HBCU's prestigious legacy and deepen its national footprint—placing an HBCU campus in the heart of the San Francisco Bay Area's innovation economy.
By adapting the proven HBCU model centered on belonging, identity affirmation, and high-expectation pedagogy to Oakland's education and workforce ecosystem, and community college pathways, an Oakland satellite makes an HBCU an attainable, affordable, and attractive option for local students.
